Bloodthirsty?

From YA author Lucienne Diver! Welcome Luciene!

I learned a very interesting thing this month.  Death sells. I know, morbid, right?  I write young adult fiction, but I’m also a scientist of sorts (I was an anthropology as well as an English/writing major).  So when my new book, FANGTASTIC, came out, I decided to try a little social experiment: two Facebook ads, one cover, two different taglines:

Secret
missions, minions and murder…absolutely FANGTASTIC! Read the Vamped young adult series by Lucienne Diver.

Drama,
disappearances and doomsday dresses… FANGTASTIC by Lucienne Diver, a January release from Flux Books!

I based my pay rate for the ads on click-throughs so that I could track the success.  Apparently, secret missions and murder beat death and disappearances hands down.  Intriguing, but unsurprising, given that half of what’s on tv these days involves the words Law & Order and the other half CSI.  Exaggeration?  Perhaps.

There’s also Forensic Files, Extreme Forensics, Bones, Criminal Minds, Buried Secrets, Deadly Women, Dateline ID,
I (Almost) Got Away With It, Behind Mansion Walls, True Crime with Aphrodite Jones….  I could go on and on.  (Hi, my name is Lucienne Diver, and I’m a mystery fanatic.)  It’s clear, though, that we don’t want our bodies to stay dead and buried.  Whether they rise from the dead as bloodsucking fiends (or, as I like to call them, Bobby and Gina), or are
otherwise unearthed, it’s what comes after the big reveal that’s so intriguing.

You might surmise from this that I’m a bloodthirsty wench and that my novels are all death and destruction, but you’d be wrong.  Some of my very favorite novels and shows ever have combined the dark and the light—the tension-breaking absurdity of life with the tragedy of death—think Buffy:
The Vampire Slayer
,
Shaun of the Dead,
Zombieland, Charade,
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
and anything written by Christopher Moore.
If your tongue is firmly in cheek during battle, you have less chance of bting it off when hit with that unforeseen upper cut.  I’m just saying.

I’ll choose one commenter at random to win a free signed copy of the new book, so drop a comment below!

  1. Marilynn, my mystical Excel spreadsheet (I’m so paranormal!) has chosen you as the winner of the signed copy of Fangtastic. If you’ll send me your snail mail address at LucienneDiver @ gmail.com (spaces before and after the @ removed), I’d be glad to get that out to you. The books don’t need to be read in order, but if you’d prefer the first book in the series, just let me know, and I’d be glad to substitute.

If anyone wants more chances to win various prizes, we’re doing a special multi-author event all week at Bitten By Books! http://www.bittenbybooks.com/ (Faith is up today and you can RSVP for me today as well; I’ll be live tomorrow with Pluses and Minuses to Dating the Undead.)

  2. Deborah, so yes for the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series! Also, have you seen Johnny Dangerously or So I Married and Axe Murderer?

  3. Kaydeth, I’m a sucker for them too. I frequently have insomnia, so it’s nice that any time of the day or night I can find something that speaks to me on tv!

deazinn and raesvl, thanks for the comments!

I’ll let Excel pick a winner for a signed copy of Fangtastic around noon. If anyone decides to take a chance on a new series, I’d love to know what you think!

  4. Love reading! Book title is. AWESOME! Thank you!

P.N. Elrod recommends you, and that is enough to interest me.

Look…I can’t even spell my own first name..you can hardly expect me to leave an intelligent comment :-)

I love the mix of dark and light. I only really like the major action movies when there is humor involved: The Die Hard Series and the Lethal Weapon Series are the best examples I can think of the top of my (admittedly tired) head.

I also like humor in my paranormal romance (keeps it from getting too grim) and my romance (keeps it from getting too sappy). And of course, in my YA VAmp books :-)

Looks like an interesting book. I don’t think I have seen any of yours before.

Haha, so true that most everything on TV these days is CSI, Law and Order, or something similar! :P And I must admit that I am a sucker for such things. I look forward to reading your books. I was looking for a new series to start and yours sound quite intriguing. :)
